Ask
any
dog owner about what is the number one thing you need to do when you
get your dog and they will definitely have potty training on the top of
their list. After all, your dog will be with you in the house
and
mistakes can be messy and smelly. As soon as you bring your
new
puppy or dog home you need to establish a potty training routine.
Depending
on your dog's age there are certain training methods that you will need
to use inorder to be successful. This article will discuss potty
training a puppy
as well as potty training an
|
older dog. Please also keep in mind that
potty training will need dedication and consistent training on your
part and some breeds will learn a lot faster than others.
Potty Training a Puppy
The first thing a
novice dog owner must
understand (and which all experienced dog owners do) is that puppies
will make mistakes. If you learn to pick up on the signs of
when
your puppy needs to go, it will better your chances of
success.
Young puupies generally need to go to the bathroom when they wake up,
after playing, eating, drinking or chewing.
The first few weeks when you first get your puppy, you should get into
the habit of keeping your puppy on a leash. This means they
will
always be beside you and you can quicky take them out when you see them
sniffing the ground (this is a major sign that they puppy needs to go).
Every time your puppy goes to the bath room in the desired area, your
should praise him/her very enthusistically. If your employing
the
leash technique than don't let your puppy off the leash until he goes
to the bathroom. If you let you puppy off the leash outside
before they go, they will be more inclined to play first.
If
your puppy has an accident (and they will), don't rub their nose in it
or use any kind of physical punsihment. Make a loud noise by clapping
your hands and them up. This will make them stop and you can then
quickly take her outside to finish her business. You can then
reward
you pup when he is done. You must make sure to clean any mess inside
and get rid of the odour or else your puppy maybe more inclined to go
in the same area inside again.
It
is important to note that if you don't catch you puppy in the act, you
should never try to correct the problem as the puppy won't understand
what he is being corrected for.
Potty Training a Dog
Potty
training an older dog maybe a bit more challenging then potty training
a puppy. The reason for this is that an older dog who is not
potty trained has learned an undesired bahavior that needs to be
changed. In terms of actual training, the method is
relatively
the same. Use the same training techniques you read above and
you
should be on your way to potty training success.
Important Notes about Potty Training a Dog
While you can alway supervise your dog when you are at home, what will
you do when your puppy or dog is left in the home
