It’s
funny! When parents find out they are going to have a baby,
they
make a zillion preparations. They get a room ready with new
paint
and purchase all the necessities such as baby bottles, diapers, toys
and much more.
What many people
don’t
realize is
that you
need to make the same preparations when bringing a puppy home. After all, a puppy is a
baby and will need
certain dog supplies
to make him or her feel welcome at their new home.

Crate:
Puppies and dogs need their own place that they can call
home.
For a dog, this is a crate and it will go a long way! Not
only
will you use it to make the pup feel more comfortable
but it’s a vital tool for dog housebreaking.
Remember, dogs don’t like
to soil areas where they sleep so by using a crate, puppies will learn
to hold it for longer periods of time. Keep it mind that
young puppies
can not hold their bladder for too long so you have to take them out
more often than adult dogs.
When
buying a crate, you should think long term and purchase a crate this is
suitable for the adult size of your dog. When the puppy is
young
you can seal off a part of it until the puppy grows. The
reason
for this is that if you leave a small dog in a large crate, the dog
will pee and poo in one area which is very counter productive when it
comes to housebreaking.
New Dog Supplies - Food and Water Bowls:
Puppies and dogs need food and water bowls. Don’t
just purchase the
cheapest bowls you can find as they tend to be very light and when your
puppy is eating or drinking the bowls will move all over the place and
make a big mess. Heavier bowls tend to stay in place and
you’ll be
grateful in the long run. Also remember that larger dogs might need a
stand for the bowls to be placed on. A large dog bending his
neck all
the time to eat and drink will put a strain on the dog's neck which may
cause problems later on in life.
New Dog Supplies - Other
Necessities: Obvious
necessities for your new pup is a dog collar and a leash. You
may
consider two different leashes. One normal length for
everyday walking
and one extra long lead for training purposes. An extra long leash is
an awesome tool for training you dog to sit and wait until you call him
from far off on command. You can purchase a retractable leash
that is
multipurpose and can be short or long. Not so obvious
necessities are things like dog toys and cleaning
material in case you new pup makes a mess inside.
Toys
will
save your shoes and many other personal items. A young puppy,
just like a baby will put everything they can get their hands on in
their mouth. By providing your puppy with different types of
chew
toys, he or she will be less inclined to chew on other household items.
Dog food is also another necessity. Dog food is pretty
inexpensive, even for the more popular brands like Pedigree.
You
should ask the breeder whom you bought the dog from (hopefully a
reputable breeder) what kind of food the dog eating as it is wise to
keep your dog on the same type of food.
