Choosing a Dog Breed Quiz

With thousands of dog breeds out there, it can sometimes be difficult to narrow down your choices.  By taking a little dog breed quiz you can narrow down your choices and find a dog that suits your lifestyle.

Questions to ask yourself before getting a dog

Do you have the time and energy to adequately exercise your dog?
  • If you are not that active that choose a breed that requires less activity such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Maltese and Basset Hounds. Also, smaller dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzu are good choices. Even if they are active, they can get most of their exercise during a short walk or a romp in the backyard.
  • If you are an active individual who likes to go on long walks or runs, then consider a breed that can keep up with. A larger dog such as a German Shepard, Boxer, Labrador or Husky may be a good choice for you.

Can you afford to have a dog?

  • A dog will cost money. You also have to consider the cost of food, grooming equipment, veterinary visits (vaccinations and treatment), toys and other dog supplies.
  • In general, larger dogs will cost more than smaller dogs.  Food is more expensive and so is medication, toys, crates and other dog supplies.

Do you have children in the house?

  • Some breeds are more tolerant of children.  Having said that, with proper care and training most dogs can be excellent with children if they are raised with them.  Here are the top 5 dogs for kids:
  • Golden Retriever
  • Collie
  • Boxer
  • Miniature Schnauzer
  • Yorkshire terrier

Do you live in an apartment or a house?

  • Most dogs can live in an apartment providing that they get enough daily exercise
  • If you are looking for an ideal apartment dog, then consider a dog that is relatively less active and quieter indoors such as the Cocker Spaniel, Pug, or Bulldog.
  • If you live in an apartment you may want to avoid dogs that maybe excessive barkers such as the Beagle, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua or West Highland Terrier.

Are you really picky about the appearance of your house?

  • Some dogs shed more than others and it is important to know that even dogs with the shortest of hair can be big shedders.  If you are looking for a low shedding breed than consider a Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, Bichon Frise, Schnauzer or a Poodle.
  • Some of the top shedders are German Shepards, Collies, Pomeranians, Akitas and Alaskan Malamutes.
  • Some dogs are heavy droolers, especially during meal time.  If you can’t stand the sight of drool or don’t like the mess then you should avoid dogs that drool such as Boxers, Great Danes, Mastiff type dogs, St. Bernards and Bulldogs.
